Proxy Power Program Associate (Paid Fellowship)

Confluence Philanthropy is a non-profit membership organization with the involvement of over 175 foundations across North America and some overseas. Founded in 2009, Confluence is helping to build the field of mission-related investing (environmental*social*governance investing) by developing capacity and providing technical assistance to foundations with an interest in impact investing. We are focused on expanding our network of practitioners who strive help foundations and non-profits pursue mission-related investing strategies. This work is accomplished through multiple program areas, one of which is our Proxy Power Program.

The Proxy Power Program provides educational programming and coordination around shareholder engagement as an essential mission related investment tool. The program offers bi monthly webinars on shareholder engagement and other resources for grantmakers. The Proxy Power Program also provides opportunities for member exchange regarding shareholder campaigns, and makes resources available on shareholder engagement.

Confluence Philanthropy's Proxy Stewardship Initiative convenes representatives from leading
philanthropic and educational endowments to explore the social and institutional obstacles that
endowments face when they set out to practice conscientious proxy voting, and to identify what might be
done to address these challenges. The Proxy Stewardship Initiative specifically addresses the trouble of
proxy voting in pooled investment funds and is organizing asset owners to create reforms.

Job Title: Proxy Power Program Associate
Reports to: CEO, with oversight from the Membership Program Manager
Compensation: $18/hr.
Commitment: 10-15 hours per week- fairly flexible schedule, but must be available between 10 AM –
6PM PT at least three days per week. Fellows are encouraged to make a minimum 4-month commitment.
Start date: March / April 2014 - November 2014
Location: All work to be completed from our office located in downtown Oakland, CA.

  • Proxy Stewardship Initiative: Coordinate the Proxy Stewardship Initiative, an effort to educate philanthropists about the importance of responsible investing along ESG (environmental*social*governance) guidelines. The project will involve coordinating the creation of an Investors Toolkit and short web video about responsible investing with support from staff and consultants. The Fellow will be engaged in research, outreach, partnership development, and meeting coordination.

  • Educational program: Help collect, develop and disseminate resources to support education and actions on shareholder engagement in the membership. This includes the planning of a bi-monthly webinars in partnership with shareholder engagement experts and funders, the promotion of collaborative engagement opportunities, and the production and dissemination of a Quarterly Digest. Conduct basic research about shareholder issues and reply to membership queries as requested. Update and maintain web site resources.

  • Program marketing: Design conference session proposals. Respond to queries about the program. Help acquire new program participants.

  • Current or recent graduate student in business, finance, or experience equivalent. Graduate work prererred.
  • A passion for current environmental, social and governance issues as relates to the investment space.
  • A working knowledge ofshareholder engagement and proxy voting preferred.
  • Attention to detail, highly organized, efficient, with a self-directed work style.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills.
  • Excellent relationship management skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to perform well under pressure, with patience and a sense of humor.
